Optical coherence topography (OCT)

GOLD STANDARD HOSPITAL GRADE TECHNOLOGY WITHIN THE COMMUNITY

The OCT machine (Optical Coherence Topography) is a high-class medical equipment that enables our Optometrist to obtain significant amounts of important information about the health of your eyes. The machine, which is non-invasive differs from the standard digital retinal photography which simply takes a picture of the surface of the back of the eye, the OCT produces a detailed 3D scan of all the layers inside your eye allowing our Optometrist to spot early signs of eye disease many years early. This can increase the likelihood of maintaining health eyes, as through early diagnosis patients are able to treated early for better success.

The cross-sectional scan that the OCT offers makes accurate accounts in micro-meters of the different retinal layers. This allows for early detection of conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetes and glaucoma to name just a few.

As part of our Premium and Bespoke eye examinations the OCT scan is included with the patient receiving a breakdown of the findings. Our clinicians will show you all the graphs and data collected from each scan, and over time we are able to build archives to enable accurate monitor of any progressive ocular changes.

HOW DOES AN OCT SCAN WORK?

The OCT machine remarkably and quickly takes over 1000 images of the different sections of the back of your eye, it uses these many images to them form a 3D image for us to analyse. The scan is produced using light wave technology to bring the detail to each layer and also the accurate measurements of the differing layers. The OCT is harmless to your eye health and works just like taking a normal photograph.

Conditions that are regularly assessed and monitored using the OCT within hospital Ophthalmology departments

  • Glaucoma

  • Diabetic retinopathy (Diabetes)

  • Age related macular degeneration (Wet and Dry)

  • Detached retina

  • Macular Holes/Epi-retinal membranes

You will be pleased to know that our Optometrists are fully trained to use and explain OCT scans to our patients. We take eye care very seriously, hence we have invested world-class technology to deliver the eye care you deserve. So book our Signature eye exam today to get your OCT scan.
